Claude Viallat

Claude Viallat

Claude Viallat (Nîmes, 1936) has been and continues to be the most influential driver behind Support Surfaces. This brief movement (1969-1972) is the last vanguard of the 20th century in France.

At the end of the 1960's Support Surfaces challenged both painting as well as its actual components, such as the frame and the canvas.

Claude Viallat uses canvases without a frame and replaces traditional canvases with ordinary fabrics, such as sheets, blinds, umbrella cloth or tents. He sometimes paints the surface on both sides using a technique of staining and folding.
