Ofelia García was born in Madrid in 1951.
“I am more of a painter than a photographer. It was by accident that I discovered that I could merge the two techniques (painting and photography) together.”
DE VIAJES (2004) was the first exhibition by Ofelia García in our gallery. Through the recreation of images based on personal photos and postcards sent from far off destinations, the exhibition was a journey back in time as well as an intimate insight into the artist’s personal life. Her memories are based on panoramic pictures of American cityscapes, hotel interiors, waterpark attractions, boating excursions, and even of moments captured in front of emblematic buildings New York – iconic images of American culture in the 1960’s.
After this, there were three further exhibitions: OTROS DESTINOS in 2008, VIA 10 in 2011 and EntreVías in 2014.
"My current works are more abstract. Each one is a stepping-stone, which in turn has influenced my next piece. What I create now, is the synthesis of what I achieved before it. I remove people, spaces and contexts. I am left with a bare backbone and it is this with which I work. The shapes are more naked having stripped the more realistic aspects away from my works. Now I discover even more possibilities than before, even though it requires a lot more effort.”
